Ignoring Hispanic market one nail in Rocky Mountain News' demise

As many of you know, the Rocky Mountain News -- the 150-year-old newspaper -- close abruptly a few weeks ago. What is interesting is that in a Time Magazine column written by a former employee, the paper's ignoring of the growing Hispanic market in Colorado was cited as one of the strategic blunders.

    I live in the rural south, near Tallahassee, Florida, and as a white male I must admit that if I had not become interested in the Spanish language several years ago -- and had a lot of time on my hands to thoroughly study it -- I would probably be sort of prejudiced towards Latinos, like some of my friends. We tend to be suspicious of people who are not exactly like us. Hence, the white business owner doesn't care in the least whether or not Latinos patronize his business, unless he can clearly see that it's hurting his business.

    Luckily, the world is changing.
